When we decided to launch our Anywhere app in the iTunes Apple App Store, we knew that three things were key to creating a great app – aesthetics, easy of use and quality of content. The app had originally been featured as a general city guide search option in our first app, APPCityLife which launched with the Anywhere guide and a fully local guide for our beta city, Albuquerque, New Mexico, in early 2010. Over the years, the search API we used in Anywhere had been truncated and no longer returned the quality of results we expected. We opted to upgrade to the Google Places API with the expectation that this engine would eventually feature the growing Google+ Pages. That solved our search dilemma.
For product search, we chose to feature our longtime partner, Retailigence, a hyperlocal marketing platform utilizing brick-and-mortar inventory data obtained directly from retailers. We knew that users already accessed our APPCityLife app specifically to use this feature because of the convenience of not only finding the desired product but also the price and whether it was currently available nearby. And we gave the look and feel of Anywhere a complete makeover after hiring the talented Darren Higgs, owner of Little Island Graphics. Clean, slick and elegant, the app now offers a completely new experience for users everywhere.
When Anywhere went live on June 16, 2012, we waited to see the first day’s download numbers. What a surprise for our team when in less than twenty-four hours we exceeded our daily limit provided by Google’s API with downloads coming from almost every part of the globe from Saudi Arabia to China to Australia to Puerto Rico. We upped the limit and waited to see if the initial download spike was a trend. Imagine our pleasure to discover today that Apple featured the Anywhere app on their New Apps for Travel!
Have you downloaded the Anywhere app yet? Play with it and tell us what you think. And if you’ve used it to find a product or place, we’d love for you to share your story. Have ideas how we can make the app better? Tell us – we’re always in the mood to improve our apps!
